[Mini summary]
The movie's time period takes place right after WWI and before WWII. Ed is 18 years old. He moved to Munich, Germany during the year 1923. Ed contiunes to study rocketry with his college study buddy, Alphonse Heiderich aka "Alfons." Edward is desperate to return to "his" world to see his younger brother, Alphonse Elric. Unfortunately, "his" world is on the other side of the gate. Al ia also determined to see his older brother. With the help of sensei, Al works hard to know everything he can about alchemy. Al changes in appearance. In fact, he looks alot like Edward in the TV series. Al wears the same red coat as Ed's, has long hair, wears white gloves, and wears a black shirt. (Déjà vu anyone? lol)

[Two worlds?]
If you got confused with eps 50-51 in the TV series, the movie might help you understand or possibly confuse you even more. Ed and Al are seperated by two different worlds. In this case, "they are on the other side of the gate." The "gate" is what seperates truth from fiction. The two worlds represent those two things. Ed's world is the "alternate" world in which alchemy exists. The world beyond the gate is the "real" world, much like ours during the early 1900s, which alchemy does not exist.

[Edward in the real world]
Ed's progress in being able to use the rocket to get back to the alternate world doesn't exactly work out at first. Knowing that he has no way to use alchemy in the world he's in, he keeps doing more research. Edward tries not to get close to any of the people in the real world because he doesn't want to grow attached to them. It would make it hard for him to leave them if he found a way to return home. Ed eventually thinks that it is impossible to fullfill his task. He becomes somewhat depressed. According to the director of the movie, they wanted to show the real world's hardships of real life. Meaning that they explain the lies and unreal reatlies behind the dreams and fantasies that Ed may have.

[Besides the Elric Brothers, what about the others?]
We do see Envy as a dragon in the real world. Gluttony is still alive but appears in a much more dreadful form. Pride shows up in the real world but seems to be one of the good guys. Surprisly, Scar and Lust make their appearance in different forms too. Heiderich helps Ed with his studies. We meet a young female gypsy and a Nazi soldier that resembles Hudges(he's a good guy). Ed's father has a special role that helps his son dramatically. Winry left her home to study automail. Wrath plays a big part to help Al. Armstrong is helping Al on his quest. Roy does meet Ed again.
