This section explains Ed's relationships with certain characters in FMA.

Warning! Major spoilers ahead!

Alphonse Elric
Ed's younger brother

Ed is Alphonse's big brother. As being the big brother, Ed protects and helps Al whenever in trouble. Ed maybe not really show it but he truly loves his younger brother. The Elric Bros. rarely fight, but like most siblings, they always get in a tiny argument about something silly.

In depth:
Even though the two have a very close relationship, sometimes they intend to hide their feelings from each other. Not because they don't care, because they don't want to trouble one another. Or they're afraid on what the other will think. Like for example, episode 17, when Ed gets his automail reapired at the Rockbells, he wanted to ask Al something that bothered him for years. Al suppects it to be something about his past life, whether he really was human or not. That night Ed never asks Al the question. Later on during episode 23, Ed is hospitalized due to an accident at the 5th Labatory along with Al. Both were bothered emotionally. Al was thinking of his past, Ed was thinking about Al. By the end of the episode, Ed and Al get into a fight. Al kept asking his brother "Was I really human? Are the memories I know even real? Or fake?" Ed was shocked that Al would think such things. He knew they were together for their entire life. Sadly, Al ends up running away. Seeing that, Ed was tremendously hurt and wanted to follow him. Episode 25, the two brothers finally reunite and fight side by side again. During that time Ed finally asks Al the question. Ed asks "Al, do you hate me? For what I did to you that night? For putting you in the armor?" Al seemed surprised and told Ed "I..I don't hate you brother." After all that, they seemed to be even more close than before.

Winry Rockbell
Winry, Ed's mechanic

Winry is Ed and Al's close childhood friend. She is also Ed's automail mechanic. There is no real proof of "romance" in their relationship. I have a hard time seeing Ed being in love with anyone. He doesn't appear to be the kind of guy who falls for a girl...easily. Even if he did, it wouldn't be a easy thing for him. Ed's just a tough-like alchemist.

In depth:
Winry really worrys and cares for the Elric brothers, especially Edward. Ed and Winry don't really act like boyfriend/girlfriend but more like siblings; brother and sister. She argues with Ed alot, like about taking care of his automail better or drinking milk. Sometimes she can be really abusive and smack Ed on the noggin' with her wrench. Ouch!

Tricia Elric
Elric brother's mother

Tricia loved her children with all her heart. Ed and Al loved their dear mother with all their heart too. Tricia barley yelled at her children. She showed loads of love and compassion to her sons and was happy for them all the time.

In depth:
After her husband's departure, she encouraged the boys to study alchemy. Tricia became very proud of their hard work. The Elric Bros. were raised well and Tricia basically did it alone. Her husband went on a journey and never was heard from again. Ed wasn't happy with his dad and thought of him as a jerk because he never came back home to see his family. It made Edward even more furious when his father didn't show up for wife's funeral.

Roy Mustang
Ed's boss

The one and only colonel who can burn anything to ashes with a flick of his fingers, the "Flame Alchemist," Roy Mustang. Roy and Ed didn't exactly get along at first. They quickly became rivals shortly after the meet in person. Though Ed's rivalry might have started while he was on the train going to Central City to see the colonel.

In depth:
Little does Ed like to listen to the colonel, Roy mocks FullMetal with a height joke everytime Ed gives his progress report. Roy obliviously enjoys picking on Edward. Ed hates when the colonel teases him all the time. But they seem to respect each other to a certain extent. Ed sees Roy as a bossy and good for nothing commander but knows he has a good side too. Roy sees Ed as a small and irritating little brat but also sees some positve points in him. Do they show that respect to each other? No quite. In the beginning, Edward has an hard time ensuring his trust to Roy. Ed tries to keep his life locked from Roy. Mustang's trust in Edward wasn't for certain in the beginning either. But the more the series went on, the more we learn from their actions and how they grow more trusting in one another. The question "Roy letting Ed win" at the end of their duel in episode 13 is unanswered. That remains an mystery. Episode 37, the Elric Bros. runaway from the military. Roy and the other military staff were ordered to capture the bros. and return with an explanation. At the end of 37, it became clear Roy didn't chase Ed and Al because it was an order. The reason is because they made him angry. Roy yells, "Why didn't you come to me for help?!" Episode 50, it's the last time Ed will see Mustang until the movie. Their final sence together was quite amusing. Surprisely Roy uses his left hand to shake. Edward reaches his left hand out and taps the center of Roy's palm. Both of them smirk as Ed turns around and walks off. That was their final farwell. Throughout the series, Ed's relationship with Roy can be seen in different ways. Confirmation of their "true" relationship is hard to comprehend.

Hudges Maes
Look at my daughter, isn't she cute?

Ed first met Hudges during the fight on the train in episode 5. Hudges liked Ed from the start and became somewhat good friends with him. Hudges never stops talking about his daughter. He constantly shows photographs to everyone he runs into. Ed thinks Mr. Maes is a good man but wishes he'll quit annoying him about his daughter! o_O

In depth:
Ed and Al get to know Hudges pretty well. Mr. Maes grows protective and understanding towards them. Hudges learns some dangerous information and takes a huge risk. This investigation ends up getting himself killed by Envy. As soon as Ed learns of Hudge's murder, he gets very upset.

Riza Hawkeye
The sharp shooter

Hm, Ed and Riza aren't really close friends, just acquaintances. Otherwise, I haven't seen anything more than that. Riza often hangs around by Roy's side. She sees Ed as a skilled Alchemist and respects him like any other State Alchemist should be treated. I don't think she ever called Ed "short" either. I may be wrong on that but she's one of the few that doesn't treat Ed lower than themselves.

Maria Ross
Seems to worry about Ed

Lt. Ross is one of Ed's assistants. To her, she is authorized to treat Ed as an higher commander, as a superior, but Maria knows Ed is not yet an adult and can't always do everything by himself. Even though she is suppose to follow his orders she still knows the fact Ed is still a "kid." She wishes Ed would show a little more faith in adults and ask for their help once in awhile instead of doing dangerous missions solo. It is oblivious that Maria worries about him. Like a mother worring about her child.

Alex Louis Armstrong
Shows his biceps to much...

You can tell this guy seriously loves to show his muscles alot...perhaps too much for his own good. Oh god, the pink sparkles! It's indeed frightening! But besides that, he's a good partner to have when it comes to brute strength.

In depth:
During the battle between Ed and Scar, Armstrong came in the nick of time to help Ed out. Luckily, Scar was no match for Armstrong and Ed and his friends were able to escape safely. This could be just me, but Armstrong intends to be a little over protective of the Elric Bros. Almost whenever Ed and Al decide to go somewhere out of town, Armstrong insists of acompanying them. However Ed gets annoyed whenever this guy tails along with them. Like riding in a train, poor Ed has no room. Alex takes up alot of space.

Rose
Doesn't believe Ed

We see Rose in the first episode. Boy Ed and Rose sure didn't agree well in some things. She follows, worships the sun god and the high preist, Father Cornello. Her point of veiw of the high preist's powers are "miracles," but Ed knew it was all a fake. What Father Cornello calles miracles turns out to be "alchemy." Ed tells her these miracles are bogus, but does she believe him? Heck no. Rose immediately slams Ed's thoughts down, flatter than a pancake. After all, she didn't trust him. During the fight with the high preist, Ed eventually spreads the truth to the people. Rose at the end is in huge shock and STILL hesitates to beleive Ed. Edward left her on the ground while saying, "Get up. you have legs. walk forward..." Later on, Roze shows a little more faith in Ed and what he did to help her out.

In depth:
During episodes 42 and 43, Rose didn't exactly get the best of things. She gave birth to an child due to some trouble with some men. Ed's reaction showed that he was somewhat terrifed. After that, he appeared to be very gentle towards Rose and her newborn. Ed helps Rose and her people escape from the ongoing war. He ends up protecting Rose and the baby from Wrath and Sloth's attempt to stop their escape. We see a scence when Ed slow dances with Rose. Sometime during their dance, Ed blushes.

PSiren (thief)
She has a thing for Ed

As flirty and sexy she is, she makes Ed all nervous. PSiren first is seen working at a local hospital as an nurse. She first meets Ed (as a nurse) when he was suffering from a bad stomach ache. PSiren tries to give Ed the shot, but he refuses to take it, so Al had to calm him down. While Ed was screaming, before he even knew it, PSiren had already given him the shot. "See? That didn't hurt at all, right?" she said. Ed blushes without saying anything. Little did he know that she is also the midnight maiden theif! One scene when Ed was chasing PSiren, he trips and falls ontop of her accidentally touches her breast. "A woman?!" He shrieks.

Russell
Is taller but younger than Ed

Russell is the older brother like Ed. Blonde-haired and witty like Ed. His studies alchemy just like Ed. Russell is YOUNGER and taller than Ed. Of course, Russell teases Edward about his height and Ed gets pissed. Are they friends? Not really. Also, Russell and his younger brother Fletcher "borrowed" the Elric brother's names, which becomes a big problem for Ed and Al. So Ed wasn't pleased about him from the very beginning. They sometimes get into fist fights and the younger brothers just sit there watching. However when they must, they work together to defeat and solve bigger problems. Russell at first was blinded by only focusing on his mission; and that was making a replica of the Philosopher’s Sone. this was trouble for their town, which the red water Russell used to make the stone gave off a deadly arua. This caused many people to devolpe cancer. Ed and Fletcher were the only ones to help Russell realize what he was doing and the fact it was hurtful. At the end, Ed and Al were getting ready to leave, Russell gives a basket of food for as an thank you.

In depth:
Edward meets Russell and Flecter again deeper within the TV series. Ed's second meeting with Russ didn't change much. Russell still cracks a height joke and as usual, Ed over reacts. Russell reveals to Ed his father's secrets about the Philosopher’s Stone. Edward greatly appreciates his help and leaves to continue what he must do. The last thing Russell says was, "Come back alive!"

Klose
Is a crossdresser

At first Ed and Al thought Klose was a little boy. It turns out she is a girl. Crossdresser?? Anyway, Klose acts alot like a tomboy. She got into many arguements with Ed about several different things. Even though Klose was smaller than Ed, she still calls him "small." Hey, looks who's talking? Who's the real shrimp here? At the end of the episode, she finally wears girl's clothing. Ed calls out, "Hey, you look better dressed as a girl!"

Nina
So kawaii!

Ed and Nina were close friends. Al was really close to her as well. It was so cute when Ed and Nina played together! Ed seems to have a way with small children. Nina even called Ed "big brother." Their relationship was so pure, that when Nina and her dog, Alexander were killed, Ed got deeply hurt. His rage made him restless and depressed for a while. Ashamed that he couldn't save one little girl, he weeped for Nina. This was a VERY emotional scene and something that Ed will NEVER forget. There is even different cut scenes in the ending credits for episode 7 to honor Nina and Alexander.

Izumi
So kawaii!

Ed and Al's sensei (teacher). She's really tough and brutal. A master in fighting and of yes, alchemy.

In depth:
In Ed and Al's yonger days when first studying alchemy, there was a great flood and the villagers were having a hard time keeping the water low. The Elric brothers tried to stop the water themselves by using alchemy to create a wall. They failed but were saved by Izumi. The town was astounded by her talent and so were the Elric brothers. Infact, they wanted her to teach them how to become better alchemists. They both kneeled and begged. Izumi, even though has a tough attitude but appears to have a soft heart decides to take them in as her students. Ed respects his teacher, but is sometimes afraid to face her. For instance when Edward gets in trouble because he does not look forward to some serious butt-kicking from her. XD

Paninya
Has automail like Ed!

Paninya has a metal arm and two metal legs. She wanders the streets on her own like a street rat. She lives with a man who cared for her since she was little, which is also an master in making automail. Ed first met Paninya when he was challenged by Winry to catch Pininya before she reached the shop. Paninya takes Ed's pocket watch. Ed gets mad and rapidly chases after her. He wasn't too thrilled of this.
